Dia De Los Muertos at La Villita

I love making weekend plans and for this weekend I knew I wanted to do something related with Dia de los Muertos. We have never really celebrated it or gone to an activity involved with it but I wanted to check it out and learn more. Its always good to try something new.

So I had looked for events and made a plan and of course plans don't always go the way you want them to because I wanted to go see Say Si "Muertitos Fest" and we ended up getting lost!  I had other things on my list for the day so we moved on to the next event which was at La Villita "Dia De Los Muertos Celebration" and we ended up having so much fun!

If your wondering what Dia de Los Muertos is let me give you some info:
  • Dia de los Muertos is all about family and loved ones.
  • You take this time to honor and remember those who have passed in special ways like with creating altars, sugar skulls, food and gifts.
  • Its not a scary holiday or to be mistaken with Halloween. This is all about love.
We got to La Villita and checked out the awesome folklorico dancing. We looked at all the art which was beautiful. Then the living altar which was amazing to look at. We made a mask and then watched the dance, drum and puppet procession (my favorite part).

Didn't that look like fun? I really enjoyed the event and was so glad to try it out because I learned about something new and gave my son a good cultural experience. I will definitely be celebrating Dia de los Muertos next year with much more thought now that I had this experience.

Did you celebrate Dia de Los Muertos this year? How did you celebrate or what event did you attend? And please if you went to Say Si "Muertitos Fest" let me know how it was (Thanks in advance).

  1. Thank you so much for sharing this, we have yet to make it to a Dia De Los Muertos event. I would really like to start including my children in as much of the culture and traditions that are so strong and important in San Antonio as possible. We were sick this year, but at least I can share this post with them and we can get excited for next year!

    1. Awww thanks for checking it out! I felt the same way you did and thats why im trying to expose my munchkin to different experiences and cultural events. I think its enriching to start when there young. And everyone is sick right now because the weather changes too much in SA. Hopefully you guys feel better soon.

  2. My husband and I stumbled upon this La Villita event/celebration last year while on a date afternoon downtown. I loved it! So colorful and full of love and activities. Your photos really showcase the event well, Alvina.
